The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not simply an event, it's a transforming power. The enemy doesn't care how much you celebrate the resurrection, as long as it never changes you. Our Pastor reminded us that the resurrection did not come with a to-do list, but with a declaration: what was accomplished is already yours. Live like it!
Point 1 — The Resurrection Accomplished More Than You Know
Paul's question in Romans 6 — "Do you not know?" — exposes an acknowledgment problem. The reason old patterns keep going is not a lack of willpower; it's a lack of knowledge. When Jesus died, you died with him. When he rose, you rose with him. You weren't just forgiven, you were incorporated into his death and resurrection. Stop digging up the old you. It's dead.
Point 2 — The Burial Was Not the End. It Was the Purpose.
The old you, bound by sin, shame, and dysfunction, was buried so that you in Christ could walk free. Paul uses the word newness (Greek: kainótēs) — meaning not an upgrade or improvement, but a completely different life. Something that did not exist before. Like a caterpillar entering a cocoon: what emerges is not a better caterpillar. It's a butterfly. We're butterflies L.I.V.E. Nation!
Point 3 — The Old You Was Crucified. Stop Going Back to Visit.
Three things are dead and need to stay dead: dead relationships (people who keep reminding you of who you used to be), dead patterns and cycles (habits rooted so deep you don't even notice them), and dead religion (going through the motions of church without ever being changed). The resurrection gives you a new identity. Stop returning to an address you no longer live at.
Point 4 — What Held You Down Has Lost Its Power.
Death no longer has dominion. The contract sin had over your life has expired. Paul's one command in verse 11 is to reckon (Greek: logízomai): an accounting term meaning to write it down as fact. Before you act out of the old patterns, check the record. You were united with Christ. The numbers don't lie.
Let's stop celebrating a resurrection that hasn't transformed us. You are not who you were. The old man is buried, so put the shovel down, stop going back, and walk in the newness of life. We're living again!
